A good thing about winter is that the naked trees allow better views of the architecture. There is probably nothing worse than a beautiful building which hides behind an Oak Mustache.

Miles falls asleep during his first architectural photo walk.

I finally figured out how to kill many birds with one stone. Since shortly before my son was born and now especially after, I don't have time to do much of anything that doesn't involve diapers and spit up. Miles has become the center of the universe, but that just means he's always handy for fish-eye photographs. I haven't been able to write, take architectural photos, or wander the city like I used to. The center of the universe gets pretty boring.

About once a week I take Miles for a walk in the front loader for an hour or two to give Sarah a break from his little milk-seeking lips and razor sharp finger talons. We bring along the camera and we're good to go! Sarah can bake cookies or sleep and Miles will learn a little about architectural photo walks. This is the first part of hopefully many such walks through the city with Miles. I decide what to photograph and he decides when we go home.

Now to throw the first stone.

The following was written for Intern Development Program (IDP) credit through the Emerging Professionals Companion (EPC), as an exercise in re-purposing an existing structure and is fairly theoretical and unresearched.

In Northwest Portland, where the Pearl District and Old Town meet, there sits an historic building in need of love and attention. While this turn-of-last-century building is in no eminent danger of demolition, it is certainly in jeopardy of neglect and under use. Built in 1901, the U.S. Customs House was home to the offices and courtrooms of the United States Customs Services. Designed by Edgar Lazarus and James Knox Taylor in an European Renaissance style, the building is completely decked out in marble columns, balustrades, arches, cornices, quoins, and plenty of other classical features. Straddling an entire block beside the North Park Blocks and Broadway just north of downtown, the building has been empty for a number of years and the government is looking for a buyer. After serving time as the customs house, the building welcomed the U.S. Corp of Engineers. Recent, though failed proposals include a home for the University of Oregon Portland campus, a boutique hotel, and an international language school.

Though listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which saves it from utter destruction, the Customs House is an under-appreciated property in need of a significant repurposing. The government is kicking it around, searching for a potential buyer. Finally there has been the realization that no one wants it. The final blow to historic pride is the upcoming internet auction - a last desperate attempt to unload this historical edifice on an unseen buyer. Someone with money will buy it, but what will they do with it?

The Customs House is no longer comfortable in the neighborhood in which it sits and is no longer what potential buyers are looking for. There are no storefront windows with which to display the latest summer fashions and the offices are surely archaic and not up to data and power standards. The original use is obsolete. Nearby are renovated condos (which are nice) and weary commercial buildings (most not worth saving). But this building itself, an assemblage of marble majesty, is indeed worth saving. More than the marble we need try to save its very soul. What will it become? Law and architecture offices (if not for the high local vacancy rate), banal storage (if all else fails) or something completely different? The new use has probably only been considered along the lines of something grand to match its exquisite character. As this hasn't worked out so well, given the recent abandonment, perhaps something else is needed. To introduce a new spirit of exciting and sustainable reuse and to promote local independent businesses, I propose a mixed-use scheme that welcomes the Customs House back into the neighborhood.

A hotel is a splendid idea, but why another luxury hotel? Why not consider a hostel - the hotel's forgotten friend who encourages young and adventurous travelers to venture downtown, seeking affordable lodging in the geographic area usually reserved for spendy suites. This would provide healthy competition for the other hostel in Northwest Portland and I could see these accommodations filling one of the upper floors of the building. Another possible tenant is a used bookstore. Though Powell's Books is not many blocks away, the city can always use another interesting bookstore that fills an interesting space. I imagine (as I have not seen) the upper floors of the Customs House to contain small offices lining the sides of wide corridors – admittedly not your typical bookstore layout. However, given a little imagination and creative organization, these rooms and even one side of a wide corridor could be lined with shelves and pleasantly placed reading tables. The courtrooms might be re-purposed for this as well, and who could say no to another local coffee shop or an attractive event space?

Given the funding required to update the finishes and retrofit the structure, a major anchor tenant will be required. The tenant must be willing to put down the cash necessary to pump new life into a dying edifice, as a group that values the renovation of historic space is important in the Portland culture. Someone has to spend the money, or this building will sit vacant until someone does. One local group fitting this description is McMenamins - the restaurant, pub and entertainment group with extensive experience transforming existing structures all over Portland into excitingly artful places to share a pint or watch a movie. McMenamins might find the ground floor of the Customs House a fine location for a new full service restaurant and pub. The courtyard on the west side of the property, which opens up to the North Park Blocks, could be established as an outdoor seating place and could even spill out into the park if such a thing were ever allowed. Similar to the nearby Eco Trust Building, an old structure repurposed for retail and commercial space, the various tenants would be accessed from the interior lobbies and shared interior circulation.

Theoretically, McMenamins could operate this whole endeavor on their own, as they have experience with this sort of thing. Or another independent business could follow the McMenamins model in their own style with a result just as effective. In an effort to offer the best variety of services and multiplicity of choice, a cooperation of diverse businesses could come together under one roof, allowing the character of the Customs House to change with the times and not be subject to the detriment of one business's financial misfortune.

This renovation can implement green principles, primarily through the reuse of an existing structure and taking in local tenants rather than national chains. The heating systems can be upgraded to the best energy efficiency standards and perhaps solar power and a green roof technology can be employed. New windows that maintain the historic look but offer improved performance will help the building maintain sustainability. Having once been a customs house and then an office for the U.S. Corp of Engineers, this building is ready for something new and non-governmental. There are better places in the city for simple office space which do not require such a handsome countenance, but there is seldom such an exquisite (seemingly unwanted) space available for local artistic independent businesses such as hostels, book stores, coffee shops and pubs.
Recently, the district has undergone incredible changes. It has been transformed from a brownfield site into a dense high-rise district, in less than a decade. Even during the current recession, a few large projects are still underway, adding to the growing number of condominium towers that reach to 20 or 30 stories. The site is anchored by the OHSU Center for Health and Healing, which forms one end of the two-stop Portland Aerial Tram system. The tram links the South Waterfront to the rest of the OHSU campus, located at the top of a nearby hill. Additionally, the Portland Streetcar makes its southern terminus here, before returning north and extending through downtown to NW 23rd Avenue.

My visit to the South Waterfront occurred on a cold and partly cloudy spring day, and the rain was falling in intermittent sprinkles. I arrived by lime green streetcar with a handful of other people, having passed through the empty acres that separate this part of the city from downtown, a land waiting for future development. We disembarked at the first station, which is across the street from the OHSU building. As I stepped out, the aerial tram descended from the heavens as if to great me, and I made my way on foot across the narrow street, looking up at the dangling orb as it docked silently at its station. Another streetcar (this one blue) turned the corner to return its occupants to downtown, where I had previously come from. I felt a healthy presence of public transportation, and things seemed ready to move. Few people walked the streets except those entering and exiting the medical building, but I ventured towards the towers. Whether due to the the threat of rain, or the fact that this neighborhood suddenly sprung up out of nothing and hasn't properly populated itself - I cannot say.

Walking south past OHSU, and following the streetcar tracks, I came upon a park the size of one block which covers an underground parking garage. Grilled ventilation shafts protruded through the wet green lawn, indicating that cars lurk below the trees. The next block revealed a much larger park, well designed and complete with undulating hills, native plants in serpentine bio-swales, and low wooden bridges that meander through the space, creating crossing links from one side to the other. A sign says, "Cauruthers Park", but this fantastic green space is encircled with cyclone fencing that seems to say, "not yet open to the public." The new grass and young growies are on the verge of welcoming curious pedestrians, but perhaps at a later visit this place can be discovered. A third park can be identified as the linear green edge along the river that serves as barrier between nature and and Man's magnificent buildings. One one side there is the Willamette River and the dense growth of the opposite bank. On the other side there are close to a dozen new towers that catch the sun on their glass and reflect the billowing clouds. A young man in a black suit plays with his small jumping dog, and a couple of old ladies walk briskly by, swinging their arms much higher than arms are meant to swing. Someone was picks up trash in an attempt to keep things looking nice around the giant wind-swept pine cone sculpture.

Great care was taken to provide an infrastructure of green space in the first stages of this urban planning extravaganza, but the neighborhood is really about the buildings which fill in the spaces between - mostly tall and mostly of glass. The streetcar infrastructure is also impressive, and serves to move people through the space and connect them to downtown. The particular names and characteristics of individual towers are not important to chronicle here, as it is a work in progress. Some interesting shapes are prominent, but all have scattered balconies and smooth glass walls. As more towers are built, the South Waterfront is becoming the Little Dubai of the Northwest - a massive urban conglomeration surrounded by the ordinary and the sparse. Each tower is a little different, but being built all at once, the towers contain no history of individuality and can only be seen, for now, as immense pieces of an assembling whole. It would be a shame if they stop now, as it is incomplete, but the plans call for something great.

Some diversity is emerging, however. To accompany the host of pricey condominiums with wide views of the river and the downtown skyline, the work currently under construction includes a senior living tower community, and an income restricted six story building of rental apartments. There are only a few restaurants and businesses, so residents need to go elsewhere for most of their daily necessities, but someday all the pieces will fall into place and this will actually be a place of its own. Luckily, the streetcar runs on a loop and I board to return to downtown. The rain has started to fall with more authority, telling me to come back again when there is more to see than the progress on the latest tower.

Paul Kurthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00220986321718095371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669274754125410828.post-8015574260097549942009-10-09T21:37:00.000-07:002009-10-09T21:46:42.418-07:00Indigo

Indigo, the tower which until recently was known as the ZGF Tower or 12W (for it sits on the corner of SW 12th and Washington) has made a big impact on the west side of downtown. Just a few blocks from the Pearl District and Downtown proper, the 22 story building is mostly high-end residential over a few floors of commercial space. Zimmer Gunsul Frasca, the designer, has moved in to anchor the base of this beautiful slice of blue glass.

The windmill people are coming! The coolest part of the building sits on the roof. Four wind turbines are arrayed to harness the power of the breeze. I expect Captain Planet to show up any day now and approve overwhelmingly. Though the turbines will only generate one percent of the building's power (according to the website), this is an important symbolic step for the city. Nearby, plans for the new I-5 bridge over the Columbia River have included options with wind turbines mid-span, and I imagine that in time more turbines throughout the city could become a collective force large enough to make a difference. Until then these four energy pixies can spin their sweet little heads off.

Back to commenting on the building itself, I like the smooth blue glass and vertical tan strips that run up to the sky and slide off into the clouds, and I like that the decks do not protrude from the overall form. Rather, the glass seems to have been removed in long straight strips to reveal the living spaces (and decks) inside. Funny how architects like to think of some part of a building as having been removed, even though it has just been built.

Indigo sits unique in it's context, surrounded by old bricks, a tall steeple and tired parking lots, but I anticipate this side of the West End will continue to evolve in a modern way. Just a block to the south is Sky Lab, and there are already plans to for a Weave Building neighbor.

P.S. When I took these photos, the wind turbines had not yet been installed on the roof, and I had no idea they were coming! But you can see them here.

Paul Kurthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00220986321718095371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669274754125410828.post-1309470689873011432009-08-11T18:02:00.000-07:002009-08-11T19:57:50.670-07:00Cyan PDXThe Cyan sits on SW Fourth Street between Mill and Montgomery, gazing over an old red brick Catholic church towards the south side of downtown Portland. The west facade is comprised of a grid containing angled glass faces that lean a little north and a little south, in a pleasant alternating rhythm. Designed by Thomas Hacker and GBD, I understand the Cyan was originally intended to be condos marketed to those who can't quite afford the awesome of the Pearl District, and the floor plans are smaller to match the intended lower rates. Then the Recession of 2008-2014 happened, and before the building was finished, the units were switched over to rentals.

I am glad to see a large project come to the PSU area and I fully support bringing more housing closer to downtown jobs and the university students. I doubt that very many students will be able to afford to live here, but it exemplifies diversity by locating non-student housing close to the campus. A street car stop is just a block away linking the area to wherever you want to go.

The angled glass walls are interesting, but I don't like the way the whole grid is encapsulated in a frame of standard straight glass at the corners and at the top. Perhaps if the angles met the edges of the building and even turned the corner, it would be more dynamic - but no one says buildings need to be dynamic.

The back of the building doesn't angle at all, and is rather flat (that is, not dynamic at all). There is less glazing overall on this side, with the introduction of a metal corrugation element. I like what is happening here, but it doesn't communicate with the other side. Again, wrapping the corners would definitely provide positive transition. I feel I am waiting for the workers to bring in the balconies and attach them to the flattened face, as well as the angled face. This is not the first building in Portland that looks like it was designed with balconies and then had them scraped at the last minute.

There appears to be a good system of water flow-thru planters along the Fourth Street side, where run-off from both the street and the sidewalk can collect, circulate through the plantings and seep slowly into the earth, lessening the impact on the city's sewer system. The back of the building has a large "rain garden" if you want to call it that, where a similar on-site water storing is taking place.

Paul Kurthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00220986321718095371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669274754125410828.post-11830778903265810752008-12-29T22:42:00.000-08:002009-01-02T15:23:01.579-08:00Isabel is a Restaurant
The sleek, perhaps out of place concrete and glass box at the corner of NW 10th and Flanders Streets ironically houses a Latin/Asian fusion restaurant that opens to a pocket courtyard on the afternoon side of the Elizabeth Lofts in the Pearl District. Ancient oaks and maples violently shake loose their vivid color like they can’t stand the sight of the concrete beneath them. If the leaves were just left to their business covering the path, I would be fine with that. But some madman seems to think a loud backpack engine expelling turbo charged air is necessary to move leaves where they don’t want to be.

The trees themselves lean away slightly as this daily disruption breaks the morning calm. If only it had rained today, the leaf blowing menace would have stayed away. Never the less, the leaves have fallen and are blown for now into neat piles, and later the wind will blow them somewhere else and we’ll all meet here tomorrow and do it again until winter comes. I kick a trepid leaf back onto the path.

There are a lot of dogs out walking. The funniest dogs are pairs that are very dissimilar. A black spaniel and a greyhound wearing a lavender sweater make an odd couple. The little dog runs into the lumbering larger dog’s legs and of course the greyhound looks embarrassed by his lavender sweater. I am embarrassed for him as well and he doesn’t make eye contact. The pair and their human stop at the dog bowl fountain for a drink because their human thought it would be cute for them to drink from the dog bowl glued to the ground in the park that has a small constant stream of water gurgling in. After a quick look the dogs move on unimpressed.

The city streets cut through the long narrow park five times and I encounter three types of cars. Those that stop and let me cross, those that didn’t even see me on the curb, and most often those that slow down but don’t slow enough for me to know that they see me. So I wait to see if he is going to stop and he waits to see if I’ll cross. As he slows down considerably but don't stop, he uses hand motions at me and I sway backwards on one foot as I motion to him that he should go but it’s too late and now he is moving forward and I am moving forward but when the car gets to about one mile per hour he hits the brakes and I don’t die.

Crossing the street, I pass a homeless man sleeping under his guitar case, which is over a blanket but under a tree. He is near a bench but not on it, and beside his shopping cart but not in it. Behind him is another tree and beyond us are some squirrels heading towards that tree. Now they are in it. I think this is a lot of prepositions for so early in the morning, so I move on. Beneath him and all those other things are some leaves. I hope the leaf blowing madman doesn’t get to them.

The cigar smoking man is up ahead sitting on a brown wooden bench. He sits right in the middle of the bench with both arms spread out and resting on the back part of the bench to each side. He is looking straight ahead, just smoking. He looks like a cigar smoking eagle going in for the kill, except he isn’t moving. But I am moving, away from his smoke, so I cross to the other path. Eagles can kill you without moving or thinking. I bet he doesn’t even look at the beautiful trees as he sits there. He is probably looking at parked cars or trash.

Here comes the blond girl with the puffy white jacket and the puffy hood. She wears it even when it isn’t too cold, but today I think she’s probably got the right idea since the wind is blowing all over the place. I see her every morning but always in a different part of the park. She is heading the opposite way as always, but today we pass by the art gallery. Sometimes we pass in front of the playground, sometimes after I’ve passed the park but before she has gotten there yet. Sometimes in front of the statue of the little elephant standing on the bigger elephant. I wonder if I left later than I usually do or if she left earlier. Maybe she just didn’t have to sway on a curb and do some synchronized hand motioning with a stubborn car like I did. Probably not, since cars always stop for the ladies.

Burnside Street is equipped with buttons that control a half dozen yellow flashing lights for pedestrians to use to warn cars that a pedestrian is intending to cross and that we are serious members of the community. This tends to eliminate the third type of car-pedestrian encounter outlined above, but sadly many drivers cannot see bright flashing yellow lights and zoom past. I wait patiently and finally am allowed to cross the busier street and I am out of the North Park Blocks.

The park is beautiful and autumn is my favorite season.
Paul Kurthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00220986321718095371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669274754125410828.post-14602385172289537122008-10-25T19:03:00.000-07:002008-10-25T21:00:06.409-07:00Transit Predicts Growth
I look forward to new progress in Portland's public transportation system. Less than a year from now, in Fall 2009, Tri-Met's Green Line opens, adding a fourth color to our triune transit scheme. I am particularly interested in how the new rail line will affect Old Town and Chinatown as previous light rail lines have led to redevelopment of blighted areas. Additionally, this new line will provide an indirect link from Union Station to Portland International Airport (you have to change to the Red Line somewhere along the way) bringing together Amtrak and airplanes. I haven't used these two modes of travel in the same trip before, but now I could. I like the possibilities, even if unconventional.

When a light rail line goes in, the neighborhood around it densifies as people choose to live within convenient walking distance of the stations. While these transit lines do cost a lot of money, we are spending less on freeways and automobile infastructure while still moving people to their destinations. We are spending our money smarter. Residents who choose to live in concentrated places near where they work and shop are helping to shape a different city, a denser city.

The last new line to open in Portland was the Yellow Line, in 2004. The Interstate Corriodor Urban Renewal Area has formed around it, creating a framework for concentrated future growth, sprouting exciting architectural opportunities. Someone living in Old Town could only ride the train for a stop or two before getting off at a downtown destination. He might as well walk.

From the other side of things, I suppose the Yellow Line and Green Line will connect people out on Interstate or in new rail communities such as Clackamas, to end destinations in Old Town. Currently my only end destination in this district is The Golden Horse Chinese Resteraunt. I can't think of anything else to do there besides avoid a drug exchange. We need more destinations in Old Town. When the new span opens to traffic, this steel green beauty will be put to rest before it reaches it's 60th year. While I think the new bridge is great, and the old bridge should rightly be replaced because it is structurally failing and undersized for today's transit needs, it is sad to lose a beautiful old bridge.

There was talk of reassembling the old green bridge downtown, relocating it at Flanders Street to span over I-405 for pedestrian and bicycle traffic only. The proposed link would connect Nob Hill to the Pearl District with a safe passage for the non-car inclined. It would be an emblematic recycling project typical of what Portlanders are trying to do every day on a smaller scale. Why build a new bridge when you can re-use an old one? As of now, the project is not going to happen, as I imagine costs are prohibitive and apparently the bicycle lobby and historic bridge lobby are no match for reality. Too bad.

Pedestrian bridges are a good idea because they allow people to pass otherwise difficult or unpassable places that are better not shared with cars. The proposed relocation of the Sauvie Island Bridge at Flanders Street is between two "almost car-only" bridges at Glisan and Everett - both difficult and dangerous crossings for pedestrians. I don't bike but I'm sure those who do would appreciate a dedicated safe route to cross the freeway, and we would like more than the three feet or so which has been provided on only one side of the road to walk.

I found these images in a recent issue of Architectural Record.

The bridge above has separate bike and pedestrian paths that come together in the middle before splitting off again on the other side of the river. The colored glass panels on this bridge wouldn't make much sense on a car bridge. Though these examples all span rivers, they could just as well span a road, a canyon, or any other impassable terrain in a city with more than one mode of transportation.Paul Kurthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00220986321718095371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669274754125410828.post-74151503072257835042008-07-10T21:10:00.000-07:002008-07-10T21:37:46.078-07:00Why would you want to live here? This is a condo building in the Pearl District. Housing 76 units on about ten floors, the North Park Lofts is a beautifully renovated old building with a modern hat. While many of the units don't have balconies and the ones that do are not large, this building is across the street from the North Park Blocks; a front yard big enough for all to share. (Amenities include: basketball courts, bocce courts, large green trees, and the Portland Dog Bowl fountain for our smaller four legged friends. Also very near is the train station, some future light rail stations, and various sorts of shops and grocery stores. I chose to post this particular building as I happened to walk by today and snapped this lovely photo.

On this same property, if transported cleverly to the suburbs, you would probably see three or four houses occupying the same space, and most likely only one story each. But that is what the people want, right? Some say they can't afford to own a unit in a building like this, so they live in the suburbs and drive to their job in the city, but many people seem to want it. Most people view the suburbs as the only way people live, without giving a second thought to other possibilities. Maybe a few people live on farms or maybe poor people live in the inner city, and maybe someone lives in the Congo... The suburbs have been around for the last 60 years or so, which actually isn't very long.

Americans are accustomed to their large living spaces and their large driving spaces. We cover so much ground each day that living in one city and commuting to another for work is normal. Driving to a third city for shopping, and then driving to a fourth city for an evening of entertainment is normal. We can go where we please, when we please, and as far as we want and it only costs energy. We want our own space and we don't want to share anything. We don't want to change.

I propose that we can't all have everything we think we are entitled to and think we want, just because we have been told that we could have it and perhaps we do have it right now. The American dream. I am only a few years out of college and still paying off debt. I don't expect that I have a right to own any sort of home right now, in the city or the suburbs. Some day perhaps. The sub-prime lending crisis, the threat of peak oil, and global warming all tell me that everything isn't rosy and we need to be fine with that. Are we willing to give up our cars, our multiple flat screens per house, our unused front porches, our guest room, junk room, office room... how about having more bedrooms than children?

Some good documentaries, both by Gregory Greene are, The End of Suburbia (2004) which predicts an end to the quintessential American residential landscape and Escape From Suburbia (2007) which explores some ways that certain people are leaving the suburbs. If we consider that our way of life could be a troubled path, we have opened the door to doing something about the problem, and even admitting that there is a problem. The suburbs might not be around forever, or they might at least be very different than they are today.

So, why would you want to live here, so many feet off the ground without your own eighth acre of land? Because you are not the only one who matters. We need to distance ourselves from the suburban lifestyle which is made possible by cars and oil. If you were not able to drive tomorrow, could you get to work or buy food? According to the July 14, 2008 issue of Newsweek (page 45), 69% of petroleum in the US is used for transportation, and 96% of the transportation sector gets its energy from petroleum.

Purposefully setting aside certain freedoms is something that most people have never done. We are running out of oil and energy is becoming more expensive. To a certain degree we just pull out our wallets and take the hit. But sooner or later we won't be able to withstand the pain. Our choice is to implement another energy source that allows us to maintain our current lifestyle without a reliance on oil, or we must change our personal reality at its very core and live differently. We can search for new ways to power our cars so we can get around, or we can sell our cars and live near to where we work and play. We can buy locally so that our goods don't have to be shipped around the world with ever increasingly expensive energy. Living simply and separate from dependence on oil is just good common sense. If we require less, then we will need less; as most of our needs are a manufactured farce. Rather than try to maintain our freedom to have whatever we want, we need to desire less and be happy with what we have. This includes living on a smaller footprint and sharing some space with our neighbors. Choose to be a good steward of the earth before you don't have a choice.
Paul Kurthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00220986321718095371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3669274754125410828.post-73388967599333409752008-07-01T22:00:00.000-07:002008-10-25T20:30:00.008-07:00Urban Parking Lots

The urban parking lot is a little black hole in the dense fabric of the city. I pass them wearily as I walk from block to block and I imagine which Smart Park will stop selling its soul for $12 a day and grow up into a building of some consequence. Preferably at least three storys. Maybe nine. Or which derelict one story office building with its smashed-in windows and peeling beige paint will be the next to go, ceasing to need its private surface parking lot which can only accommodate the cars which serve paying customers for a few hours a day.

While the city is overwhelmingly growing through density, small asphalt rectangles of a violating lifestyle are content to hide in the shadows of increasingly taller neighbors. During the day they support an influx of cars that wait for their humans to return, making oil puddles that shimmer in the sun. At night...um...nothing happens. We need to hide these parking lots underground and under buildings.

I suppose it is unscientific or nonliterary to say they are just plain ugly. They are just plain ugly. The Hive Modern Furniture store (above center) which is housed in a one story green box surrounded by a parking lot on all sides is bound to be replaced by denser development sooner or later, as it is situated on the North Park Blocks in the Pearl. What is outside does not resonate with what is inside. Modern furniture is about the modern city and modern living...not the parking lot. Perhaps Hive will soon occupy a nice ground floor retail space of a mixed-use building, maybe on this very site. Perhaps one with an underground parking lot to bury the vestige of Henry Ford, and with several welcoming residential floors above for people to actually live in with their modern furniture.

Boo to the surface parking lot. You are ugly.
Paul Kurthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00220986321718095371noreply@blogger.com0
